Spellbound!

Art work done by me

...A play of words, found words to be exact. It starts of with a lecture on Dada art movement (1916 to 1922) for my students. Marcel Duchamp one of the famous Dadaist challenged the whole idea about conventional art and artistic process. He puts a urinal in a gallery and dubbed it "art" and naming it Fountain. In doing so, he called into question the notion of what is art.

“Whether Mr Mutt made the fountain with his own hands or not has no importance. He CHOSE it. He took an article of life, placed it so that its useful significance disappeared under the new title and point of view – created a new thought for that object.” Duchamp

Dada was not confined to just visual arts its influence reached into sound, music and literary arts. With the readymade philosophy Dada, art in literacy later developed in what be known as found poetry. Taking 'found' words in random, re-arrange , appropriate by altering the text through addition or subtraction forming a new systematic reading and meaning.

It is similar to the visual art of "appropriation" by which two and three dimensional art is created from ordinary everyday items. Through the process creating an unexpected combinations or juxtapositions forming a new piece of art.
