The Origin of Painting

Sometimes back in 2003 when I was a student in UniTAS, my lecturer told me the story about Pliny the Elder’s account of the origin of painting. I was and still am very much intrigued by the story. It goes something like this, it is of Butade’s daughter traced the shadow of her lovers’ profile upon a wall prior to departing for a battle. By capturing the shadow, the daughter is symbolically retaining her lovers’ semblance, his sole, his double, his other, in order to keep the essential part of him upright and alive so that he will return. Sadly it seems he did not, and her father filled the shadow with clay and produced a relief of the lost love. If that is not fascinating enough I was even more awed by the illustration that my lecturer showed. It was by Eduard Daege, titled The Invention of Painting (1832). I finally got to see the actual painting in Berlin. It just so happen and a very lucky me that Eduard Daege (1805-1883) was a German painter from Berlin. I stand and stared at the painting for a while at the National Gallery in Berlin to rekindle the moment. Poetic, Symbolic, Romantic. How can one not fall in love...Sigh!

Cycle Craft

Its been crazily hectic since I got back. Preparing the bicycle for the trip. I'm like a crazy mechanic trying to make sure all the parts work and that my set up suits me. Not forgetting my obsession with the aesthetic of the bike...eh! I'm an artist so the bike needs to look good too. So the kitchen has been my temporary bicycle garage. Anyway its so exciting. So here work in progress even though its bulky but it is a beeeau-T...awesome!

Peregrinate

...And so what I've been up to for the past few weeks and more? I've been travelling to Germany (Berlin) and UAE (mainly Dubai and a small part of Sharjah). Just got back today and I'm so rejuvenated. The best part of it all is that the travelling is not finish yet. Firstly I will be embarking on the cycling trip from Singapore to Thailand this weekend. On top of that a mountain trekking adventure is in the itinerary in few weeks time. Will write more about the trip and reDiscovery later on, in the mean time... some visuals.

...it starts with a lone journey and end with familiar faces..."Never stops exploring"
